“Can the people who do this stop doing it? Online or at my shows,” she wrote. “It's the opposite of what I want and it bothers me that anyone thinks there is a place for this in this community. “I won’t tolerate it.”
The anti-Swift sentiment from Charli XCX's audience is likely due to Swift releasing a UK-exclusive digital version of her latest album. The Department of Tortured Poetswhich some fans have speculated was an intentional effort to ensure Golf club it did not surpass its first place on the charts. (Apparently, Swift has made a habit of these kinds of tactics. Read our breakdown of the entire situation here.)
Additionally, fans have interpreted lyrics from the Golf club The song “Sympathy is a Knife” will be about Taylor Swift.
“This girl plays on my insecurities/I don't know if she's real or if I'm wandering/A voice tells me they're laughing/George says I'm just paranoid,” she sings on the tune. “I'm really apprehensive right now/ I don't want to see her backstage at my boyfriend's show/ Fingers crossed behind my back/ I hope they finish quickly.”
Since Charli is currently dating The 1975 drummer George Daniel, the lyrics appear to reference Swift's brief but highly publicized relationship with The 1975 frontman Matty Healy. Charli also previously opened for Swift on her 2018 “Reputation Tour,” an experience she reportedly didn't love.
“I am really grateful that [Swift] he asked me on that tour. But as a performer, I felt like I was going up on stage and greeting 5-year-olds,” Charlie said at the time. “I finally need to own my own shit.”
Charli's fans weren't the only ones attacking Swift this weekend. During Foo Fighters' set in London, Dave Grohl seemingly poked fun at the pop star and his “Era's Tour,” which also had a stop in London over the weekend. The comments prompted a subtle response from Swift, who also brought up Travis Kelce.
