From “I Love It” and “Fancy” to “Speed Drive” and “Boom Clap,” Charli XCX has been elevating pop music with raucous production and a giant hook for over a decade. On Thursday (February 29), the Grammy nominee officially ushered in her new era with the delightfully raucous “Von Dutch” and accompanying music video.
“I'm just living this life, Von Dutch/ Klat classic, but it's still pop/ I'm getting money, you're crazy/ Because the bank stopped,” he sings over a sizzling electropop beat produced by EASYFUN.
In the music video for the brash song — one that fully embraces her status as an artist who straddles the line between pop star and cult favorite — Charli wreaks havoc in a half-empty airport. He embodies the archetype of an overgrown lad as he walks down moving runways, enters empty planes and hangs out on the baggage carousel. The visual was shot at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport and directed by Torso.
“Von Dutch” is the lead single from Charli's upcoming sixth studio album, Brat. The new record is the continuation of 2022 Conflictwhich topped the UK album chart and reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200, making it the highest-charting LP of Charli's career in the US On February 24, Charli discussed her new album on X, Writing, “I was born to make dance music. I came from the clubs. XCX6 is the album I've always wanted to make.”
