On January 25, 1992, Tracy Lawrence's rookie single “Sticks and Stones” reached No. 1 Advertising signHot Country Songs Chart. It marked the first of eight career home runs.
The song, written by Roger Dillon and Elbert West and produced by James Stroud, led to Lawrence's self-titled LP, which became his first of 10 top 10 hits on the top Country Albums chart.
Lawrence was born on January 27, 1968 in Atlanta, Texas and was drawn to music at the age of 15. He arrived in Nashville in a beat-up Toyota in 1990 and signed to Atlantic Records the following year.
Notably, “Sticks and Stones” became the first of 19 consecutive top 10s to open Lawrence's career on Hot Country Songs (they include his first seven No. 1s). His streak reached No. 4 with “How a Cowgirl Says Goodbye” in August 1997, a record that dates back to the chart's inception in 1990, until Carrie Underwood tied for 27 career-starting top 10 singles that promoted in series in 2005-18. . Lawrence's career start streak remains the longest by a man and is second only to Underwood's.
Lawrence made his most recent trip to the Hot Country Songs summit in June 2007 with “Find Out Who Your Friends Are”.
Now 55, Lawrence is still an active touring actor. In May 2023, the album was released Live in Billy Bob's Texaswhich features many of his hits including “Sticks and Stones”.
In November, Lawrence hosted the 18th annual Mission:Possible Turkey Fry and Benefit concert at the Nashville Fairgrounds, which also featured Priscilla Block, Lee Brice and Halfway to Hazard. To date, the event has raised more than $1 million in support Nashville Rescue Mission.
