“You know how the bass guitar in a song looks like its 'thick', its 'bottom'? I attached a body to it,” Meghan Trainor reflected Bulletin board in 2014 after her first hit, “All About That Bass,” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in July.
Kevin Kadish, who wrote and produced the song with Trainor, “had the title and said none of his previous co-writers could figure out what to put that together,” he noted. “So, I said, 'What about a booty?' Let's talk about it!' From there, it turned into “Let's make a song about loving your body… and your booty.” ”
Blending pop with retro R&B/Motown and elements of tropical, all of which influenced Trainor who grew up on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts, “All About That Bass” ruled the Hot 100 for eight consecutive weeks, beginning on the September-dated chart. 20, 2014.
One of the lyrics of the song caused a lot of social uproar: “I bring booty back. Go ahead and tell them skinny b–es!” “Even with some of the hateful comments I've seen, they've started a conversation,” Trainor said Bulletin board at that time. “But, I don't pick on skinny girls. Some girls commented: “I'm a zero so you must hate me.” But that's not it at all! There have been fights on my YouTube page like “You don't know what he's talking about. “I wrote it for me too, because I've struggled with it [body image] since I was very young,” Trainor shared in 2014. “And, my best friend is a beautiful goddess, but she'll pick herself out in the mirror. “My forehead is too big” or “My shoulders stick out too far…” So if other girls can relate to the song, it makes me feel even better. It's unreal that I'm helping people.”
Trainor's first LP, Titletopped the Billboard 200 for one week in January 2015. She became the 13th lucky woman to debut a No. 1 album and a Hot 100 song in the chart's more than half a century. Others to achieve such double dominance include Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Kelly Clarkson and Britney Spears.
Trainor was also crowned Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards in February 2016.
Title yielded two more Hot 100 top 10s: “Lips Are Movin'” (No. 4 peak) and “Like I'm Gonna Lose You,” featuring John Legend (No. 8). Trainor added a fourth top 10, “No” (No. 3, 2016), among eight career top 40 hits, most recently with “Made You Look” in 2023.
Trainor scored a second Billboard 200 top 10, a No. 3 peak Thank youin 2016. Her sixth and most recent top 40 entry, Eternaldebuted at his No. 27 high this June. The deluxe edition of the set arrived in August, and the current single “Whoops” ranks No. 19 and 27 best on the Adult Pop Airplay and Pop Airplay charts (dated September 21), respectively. Trainor has also co-written two No. 1s on the Country Airplay chart: “I Like the Sound of That,” which Rascal Flatts topped in 2016, and Lauren Alaina's “Road Less Traveled” in 2017 “From my father [Gary] he's a musician too, he wanted me to be a songwriter who could do any genre. I want to do all kinds of things,” she said in 2014. “So at one point he was like, 'Girl, give me some country cuts!' I said, 'Okay, Dad, I'll bring you these cuts to the country, no problem!'”
Trainor's mother, Kelli, has even scored a hit with her daughter: their “mom” topped digital song sales after Mother's Day 2020.
Trainor also has an extensive television presence, including as a consultant on NBC The Voice in 2015 and released her first book, Dear expectant motherin 2023. The Timeless tour kicked off on September 1st and runs through October 19th at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California.
Trainor is still signed to Epic Records, which released and promoted “All About That Bass.” The song has attracted 4.9 billion radio audiences and 1.1 billion on-demand streams in the US and has sold 5.8 million downloads to date, according to Luminate.
“When I got my record deal, and with this song, I was like, 'Great, I've got a chance to say something to the world.' I'll take it,” Trainor shared in 2014. “That's the best message I could say.”
