Chelsea Wolfe is the latest artist to perform a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR, delivering a stripped-down four-song set that samples tunes mostly from her latest album. She approaches She approaches her.
The singer is known for combining gothic rock, doom metal and folk into a sound uniquely hers. Accompanied by his collaborator Ben Chisholm on piano, Wolfe played acoustic guitar on two of the songs (“Whispers in the Echo Chamber” and “Flatlands”), while preparing it for the other two songs (“Dusk” “Place in the Sun”). “). Of the four songs, only the one that closed the set, “Flatlands”, was not from She gets closer to her, gets closer to her. Wolfe goes back to 2012 acoustic album Unknown rooms for that performance.
As noted in NPR's description on YouTube, Wolfe added some personal touches to her surroundings: “Not long after her arrival, Chelsea Wolfe carefully placed a handful of objects on the desk in front of her: a dagger, a chalice, a pentacle and a flower. — all inspired by the Wizard tarot card, which symbolizes new beginnings.”
The Tiny Desk Concert is a fitting precursor to Wolfe's recently announced one. Unbound EP, which offers stripped-down versions of songs from She gets closer to her, gets closer to her. The five-song effort, arriving Nov. 15, features the three album tunes he performed for NPR, as well as “The Liminal” and “Cellar Door.”
Wolfe recently launched a tour of the UK and Europe, ending with a show on November 18 in Athens, Greece. He will return to the United States for a short run of shows launching December 4 in Somerville, Massachusetts (pick up tickets here).
