Cher mourns the death of Norman Jewison, the beloved director behind films such as Violin on the Roof and Moonstruck, the latter of which starred the “Believe” singer alongside Nicolas Cage. Jewison died on Saturday (January 20) aged 97.
“Bye sweet prince,” Cher wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Monday (January 22). “Thank you for one of the greatest, happiest, most fun experiences of my life. Without You, I wouldn't have my handsome golden man. Norman U Made Moonstruck THE GREAT FILM.”
He concluded, “NORMAN JEWISON LIVES THROUGH HIS WORK.”
Moonstruck, released in 1987, is based on the play by John Patrick Shanley and follows Loretta Castorini (Cher), an Italian-American widow who, through a twist of events, falls in love with her fiancé's hot, estranged younger brother, Ronny. Cammareri (Cage). The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including a nod for Jewison for Best Director. Moonstruck it eventually won three Oscars: Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen, Best Actress (Cher) and Best Actress (Olympia Dukakis).
A seven-time Academy Award nominee himself, Jewison received the prestigious Irving G. Thalberg Memorial from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences in 1999. Jewison earned Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Picture for Violin on the Roof (1971) and Moonstruck; received another name for At the HIGHLIGHT of the evening (1967), a winner for Best Picture. and added two more for production The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming (1966) and A soldier's story (1984).
