Touch and Go Records hopes to create “a digital archive of our collective gratitude” to the beloved engineer on July 22
Chicago indie label Touch and Go Records has announced a social media campaign to celebrate the legacy of Steve Albini on the late producer's birthday on Monday, July 22.
“Although we tragically lost Steve Albini on May 7, 2024, his indelible influence on music remains. Let's turn his birthday, July 22, into a global celebration to honor his life and legacy,” the company wrote on social media.
Using the hashtag #ThankYouSteveAlbini, Touch and Go asked fans to “flood in with stories and photos that capture the essence of Steve's impact. Share photos of his albums that shaped you, concert memories, or even handwritten notes that resonated deeply. If you were lucky enough to meet him, let's see these photos!'
Albini — who produced many classic albums, including Nirvana In the wombPixies' Surfer Rosaand PJ Harvey's Get rid of me — also worked on several albums for the Touch and Go label, including LPs by Jesus Lizard, Urge Overkill and Albini's noise-rock trio, Big Black.
The campaign “will create a digital archive of our collective gratitude, ensuring that Steve's influence remains highly visible,” Touch and Go wrote, adding that Albini “dedicated his life to preserving the raw integrity of music. His legacy continues to inspire artists and fans alike. This is our opportunity to show the enormous impact of his life's work.”
“If all Steve Albini did with music was complain about it, he would still reign as one of its most brilliant provocateurs,” Rob Sheffield wrote in a tribute after Albini's death at age 61. “But Albini came to make noise—as a punk guitarist, as a producer, as a writer—with rock's most notoriously wild sense of humor.”
