Christina Applegate had to pause to collect herself as she took the stage at the Emmy Awards on Monday night.
The beloved actress received a standing ovation as she took the Emmys stage – holding host Anthony Anderson and with the aid of a cane – more than a year after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
“You totally embarrass me standing up!” Applegate joked.
The actress was on hand to present the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, which was won by Ayo Edebiri for her role as Sydney in The bear.
“I don't actually need him here. He's so cute,” she later joked, referring to Anderson.
Applegate was among the nominees for best lead role in a comedy series this year, which was won by Quinta Brunson for her role in Abbott Elementary. Nominees included Rachel Brosnahan, Natasha Lyonne and Jenna Ortega.
While on stage, he also introduced Carol Burnett, who took the stage to present the award below.
“This is big for me. I only have one framed photo in my house. And it's this person's and me. I mean, you're all very famous, but she's more important to me than any of you. I'm so sorry. You're really cool!” he said. “Anyway, Carol Burnett.”
“It changed variety television forever,” he added. “It was Carol, who broke new ground for all the shows that followed with sketches that have stood the test of time. And now, come. Please welcome the legend who not only paved the way for me but for all of us.”
Back in June 2023, Applegate said Variety that her illness made it difficult for her to act. “We don't know what my future as an actor will be,” he said. “How can I handle this? How do I go on a set and call the shots of what I need to my limits, physically?'
