Three of Butthole Surfers' early releases are receiving vinyl represses through Matador's new reissue campaign of the band's catalog spanning 1983 to 1991.
The first three reissues in the series include the band's 1984 debut album, Psychic… Powerless… Another man's bag1984 PCPPEP live EP and 1986 Rembrandt Horse. Remastered audio for the entire reissue series is now available via digital platforms (listen below), and vinyl editions of the three aforementioned albums will be out on March 22.
The reissue campaign will include “several key catalog titles” from the Texas band, all remastered under the group's supervision. More reissues are expected to be released in the fall, bringing the initial Butthole Surfers discography back into print. According to the Matador digital catalog of reissuesThese EPs and LPs are also part of the campaign (listed chronologically): the self-titled EP (1983), Lobster abortion technician (1987), Road to Steven (1988), louse + Widow! (1991/1989), and the 2002 archive compilation Humpty-Dumpty LSD.
The first batch of reissues shows the band at the peak of their experimental powers, creating twisted psychedelic noise that was often as offensive as it was seductive. Butthole Surfers shows from this era are the stuff of twisted legends, and the band's gonzo spirit is perhaps most palpable on these early and mid-'80s releases.
Underground luminary Byron Coley wrote in the press release for the reissues: “The early and mid-80s had their share of crazy combos: The Birthday Party, Black Flag and Minor Threat had the raw power to melt your mind in seconds. SWANS, Einsturzende Neubauten and Big Black created such overwhelming sound pressure that their sounds could actually flatten you. And Sonic Youth showcased such a dizzying, unpredictable mix of art, pop culture, and violence that you'd leave their shows drooling at times. The Buttholes shared elements with all of these groups, but added a wild psychedelic edge and a propensity for bizarre spectacle.”
