For one of the biggest shows of her career, Tems invited one of the biggest pop stars in the business – Justin Bieber.
When the Nigerian songwriter and producer appeared at Coachella 2024 on Sunday night, she brought out the big guns on Bieber, who took the stage for a performance of their hit “Essence,” originally released in 2020 and recorded with the other Afrobeats stars . Wizkid.
“Essence” was a true sleeper, impacting the Billboard charts nine months after its release. Tems would reign over Billboard's September 2021 R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay with “Essence,” making history along the way, and made her Billboard Hot 100 debut with the cut. “Essence” would enter the top 10, becoming the first Afrobeats song to do so (it peaked at No. 9).
Bieber is no stranger to breaking chart records. At 27, the Canadian pop singer became the youngest solo artist in history to score 100 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, a feat he accomplished in 2021.
The singer has been keeping a relatively low profile since June 2022, when he revealed his diagnosis with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, with one side of his face experiencing “complete paralysis”. On Sunday night, she showed no signs of illness as she bounced around the Coachella stage. See below.
Bieber's performance is sure to send Beliebers into a frenzy and renew hope for more live dates after his ill health contributed to the 2022 cancellation Justice World tour.
Earlier in the year, Bieber performed a short surprise set of classics and recent hits at Drake's 2,500-capacity downtown club History and earlier hinted at new music to come.
Tems was Billboard's 2024 Women in Music Breakthrough recipient, telling reporters before the event, “I really want to use this opportunity to say to all the women in the room, in the world, that no matter what you're going through, you should know that you are not alone. So even when you are sad, even when you are angry, there is someone who is also angry. So lift up everyone around you because they need it just like you and someone is there for you,” she concluded her speech. “The women got the women, believe me.”
She previously told Billboard: “Everybody called me Temi. No one called me by my full name. It wasn't something I had in mind. It was only now, as an adult, that I began to realize that it meant “the crown is mine.” I think it's very strong. I feel like it's manifesting, based on how my life has gone.”
