COIN / AIDAN BISSETT LIVE AT COLLEGE STREET MUSIC HALL
By Ralph Beauchamp
On 10/19, COIN brought their “I'm Not Afraid Of tour Anymore” to College Street Music Hall in New Haven with Aidan Bissett in direct support.
College Street was pretty busy from opening time Aidan Bissett step on stage. Bissett is a rising star who is steadily climbing the ranks of Sirius XM's Alt Nation playlist. His style of poppy alt music is contagious. His voice carries a propulsive energy that fills any room with vibrant textures. On stage, Bissett delivers a magnetic drawing that commands attention. He seems to be able to connect with the audience on a really personal level. His sound is full of soul and has a unique tone all its own. Since 2020, Bissett has released a string of live singles that has taken the music world by storm.
On this night Bissett and his band were a force to be reckoned with. It opened with the fluorescent 'Out Of My League'. I was amazed at how many people had come to see Bisset. From the first note, much of the pit was singing along. “All That I'm Craving” followed and the crowd went wild. Bissett played all his big hits including “Planet”, “Ultraviolet” and “Bloom”. He even broke out a few new songs from his upcoming debut album. “People Pleaser” was one of them.
Additionally, Bissett's audience devotion had a nice element to it. At one point, he jokingly pointed out a fan who had his arms crossed the entire time. It was a good laugh. Bissett closed with the smash hit “Tripping Over Air.” The College Street horde really enjoyed the daring ensemble. Looking forward to his upcoming full length.
As soon as COIN hit the stage, a great roar followed. This was the band everyone had met. COIN started in Nashville in 2012. The group consists of Chase Lawrence (Lead Vocals/Synths), Ryan Winnen (Drums) and Joe Memmel (Guitars/Backing Vocals). Matt Martin (Bass) has been a member of the tour since 2018. COIN has released six studio albums with the last being 2024 I'm not afraid of music anymore.
Opening with two songs from INCOME, COIN set the mood for the evening. “It's Hard to Care About Everything” and “Take It Or Leave It” had College Street in a beautiful haze. Their music is full of lit elements and high tempos. COINHis set was heavily influenced by their new album and their 2020 release, Dreamland. Disable “Chapstick”. Uncanny Valley (2022) had the audience floating on air. It is one of their top songs. Everyone swayed to the bold beat. “Chapstick” just kicks ass COIN destroyed it live. This was followed by 'I Want It All', 'Asking For A Friend', 'Slack' and 'Valentine'.
Throughout Lawrence controlled the stage like a puppeteer. His arms flew and he was running from one end to the other. Visually it was quite stimulating. He mentioned that this was their first time in New Haven and he enjoyed the area especially exploring Yale. COIN they also created a stimulating, immersive experience for their fans through the use of creative lighting and direction. Throughout the set, Lawrence constantly brought the crowd with his bright personality. Additionally, Winnen's drums filled the house with an acoustic intensity. Memmel's guitars created sonic riffs while Martin's bass delivered soulful grooves. COIN was on fire
COINHis set consists of 21 impressive songs. “Hannah”, “222” (with Lawrence opening the song with a piano solo), “Let It All Out (10:05)” and “Problem” were all fan favorites. COIN closed with three massive tracks. “Malibu 1992” and “Talk Too Much” from 2017 How will you know if you never try had the crowd in pure ecstasy. “Leaving a Light On” was the perfect ending. The encore was another of COINkiller tunes. “Crash My Car” sent everyone home with a smile on their face. In my opinion, one song was strangely missing from the set. I really missed “Brad Pitt” but COIN it remained a fantastic evening of cheeky music.
