Cola have announced their second album, The Gloss, and shared a new song from it, “Pallor Tricks,” via a music video. They also announced some tour dates. The Gloss will be released on June 14 via Fire Talk. Check out the new single below, followed by the tracklist and album art, as well as tour dates.
The Gloss features “Bitter Melon,” a new song Cola shared in March via a lyric video. The single was also available as a flexi disc (accompanied by a zine) and was one of the songs of the week. The album also features the 2023 single “Keys Down If You Stay”.
Cola consists of former Ought members Tim Darcy and Ben Stidworthy and Evan Cartwright (drummer with US Girls and The Weather Station). Their debut album, Deep In Viewreleased in 2022.
Darcy said of 'Pallor Tricks' in a press release: “The title 'Pallor Tricks' is obviously a play on 'parlor tricks.' that can occur when a camera is rolling. I've always been particularly influenced by the shows I (rarely) see on so-called 'reality television.' but not elevated, as in art. I'm sure there's a lot of exciting stuff going on in these programs, and I don't mean to cast doubt, this performance idea just became a jumping-off point when we were writing this. The song also moves into a more honest open chorus, a kind of musical juxtaposition.
“Craig Scheihing's video is not only a brilliant piece of film, but it also reflects some of these themes by introducing a series of screens and refracted 16MM dreamscapes alongside this kind of instant connection between Evan and his girlfriend.”
