There's a puzzle in this weekend's Consequences Crossword, “Phish Food.” Inspired by Phish, who expand studio versions of songs into their live shows, a puzzle expands a small number of crossword puzzle squares to contain more than one letter.
Here's an example chosen in honor of Ben Kaye, who came up with the pencil mascot and illustrates different scenarios each week. A square surrounded by a circle () contains a riddle. So a six-letter answer could be (BEN)DOVER, and a five-letter answer could be UN(BEN)D, and they could intersect in the puzzle box, (BEN).
You will see three riddles with circles around them in the next puzzle. Press the ESC key to enter a riddle on your computer or tablet, and on phones, go to “more” and then “riddle.” (Also, if you're on mobile, hold on! We're working to improve our mobile experience and hope to share updates soon!)
This conundrum arose after seeing Phish at Sphere in Las Vegas, which I wrote about here. My conclusion is that Phish is an incredible live act, and Sphere is a fun but very strange place that disperses the audience's attention and literally overshadows the band.
New crossword puzzles appear every Tuesday and in every weekend edition of the free Consequence Newsletter, where you can also find extra irregular puzzles. Subscribe here so you never miss a topic.
