Dave Chappelle's latest stand-up special on Netflix has some people wondering if the legendary comedian has run out of material.
The latest stand-up special, The dreamerarrived on Netflix on December 31, trying to give Chappelle fans some much-needed laughs before 2023, but was instead blessed with more controversy for 2024.
The special focuses on Chappelle's early career, but some viewers weren't happy that it focused on what appears to be his favorite punching bag, the Transgender community.
Time for some new material?
Chappelle didn't use his gift for comedy to bash the Transgender community. During the launch of The Dreamer, the comedian/actor used 12 minutes of the special to continue what many are calling an “obsession” with transgender people.
She cleverly took a shot at the transgender community by telling a story about the time she met Jim Carrey on the set of the 1999 film Man in the moon.
To do his inspired performance of Andy Kauffman, Carrey dug deep into his method acting bag, so deep that when Chappelle met him, he was “very disappointed” to meet Kauffman instead of Carrey, adding that “That's how they make me to feel trans people. .”
Chappelle isn't done. He continued, “If you came here to this show tonight thinking I'm going to make fun of these people again, you've come to the wrong show. I'm not with those people anymore. It wasn't worth it. I'm not talking about them. Maybe three or four times tonight, but that's about it. I'm tired of talking about them. And you want to know why I'm tired of talking about them? Because these people acted like I needed them to be funny. Well, this is ridiculous. I do not need you. A whole new perspective is coming. You guys will never see this coming. I don't make trans jokes anymore.”
The jokes continued with Chappelle saying he was going to joke about the “disabled” because “they're not as organized as the gays. And I like to punch.”
The obsession is real
But wait, there's more. Just minutes later in the special, she returned to the transgender topic, adding: “To be honest with you, I'm trying to build my relationship with the transgender community, because I don't want them to think I don't like them. Do you know how I fixed it? I wrote a play. I did it. Because I know gays love games. It's a very sad game, but it's heartwarming. It's about a black trans woman whose pronoun is, unfortunately, n—–. It's a tearjerker. At the end of the play she dies of loneliness “because white liberals don't know how to talk to her. It's sad.”
And he continued, “God forbid I ever go to jail. But if I do, I hope it's in California. Once the judge sentences me, I will say, “Before you sentence me, I want the court to know that I identify as a woman. Send me to a women's prison.' Once I get in there, you know what I'm going to do. “Give me your fruit cocktail, b—-, before I knock your mom—— teeth out. I'm a girl, just like you, b—-. Come here and suck that girl d— I got it. Don't make me explain myself. I'm a girl.'
Jokes about the Hollywood Bowl Attack
Chappelle even touched on the 2022 Hollywood Bowl attack later in special, where an assailant tried to break him out with a replica gun with a knife blade.
He joked that he tried to defuse the situation with a joke saying: “It was a trans man!” pointing out that it didn't happen with many in the audience saying, “Boo. It's Los Angeles, we like trans people.”
The trans jokes continued with Chappelle saying he “had a knife identified as a weapon,” adding, “I turned them on because I was LBGTQ [sic] he jokes and it turns out that guy was 'B''.
He continued that he “could have been raped” due to the fact that his assailant was bisexual.
Chappelle's jokes have become the talk of X, ex-Twitter, with users calling him out for his obsession while others defend his style of comedy.
