Dave Grohl‘s hand-drawn diagrams for crafting a beer bong and smuggling hash into a concert are both up for charity auction, estimated to rake in over $11,000 for different causes.
The Foo Fighters frontman was asked earlier this year to create two works of art to bring with him to the 2023 Sea.Hear.Now festival, which the band headlined. But naturally, he procrastinated so long that he had to scramble to get some doodles together as he arrived at the fest. The result is a step-by-step guide for making a beer bong with everyday supplies, as well as instructions for emptying a cassette tape in order to smuggle hash (or, you know, a similar substance) inside of it.
Grohl knows a thing or two about efficient beer chugging, so he had an easy time drawing the guide from memory: “We used to make these diagrams for runners backstage at shows — [we’d tell them] ‘go to Home Depot and get this shit,’” Grohl said while making his art in a clip you can watch below. “They would literally get it and screw it together before we played.”
The current bid for Grohl’s beer bong diagram is $6,501, while his “How to Sneak Hash Into a Concert” guide is going for $5,100. All the proceeds will help local Ashbury Park charities, and both winning bidders will also receive a print of Grohl onstage at Sea.Hear.Now 2023.
“Every year at Sea.Hear.Now, we collect art from musicians who are playing the festival to showcase and sell in our Transparent Clinch Gallery Pop Up Art Tent in order to raise money for local charities,” organizer Danny Clinch wrote in a statement on the auction page. “This year, I asked Dave Grohl to create some art for our cause. Dave was immediately excited about the opportunity and started throwing out some creative ideas. As the festival grew closer, I would text Dave to remind him that we would need to collect the art soon. Being one of the busiest people that I know, he arrived at the festival with a Sharpie and ready to make art. As we were looking for some poster board for his art, a runner came back with some ‘Prohibited Items’ corro board signage from the festival fences.”
Art can be useful! See a clip of Grohl in illustrator mode below.
Grohl opened up about the July 2022 passing of his mother — who inspired the Foos song “The Teacher” — in a recent episode of the Song Exploder podcast. Read about why we named Foo Fighters our 2023 Band of the Year here.
