Dave Mason was Traffic's original guitarist and thus was responsible for the original song, one of the band's most popular numbers.
This version, with Joe Bonamassa, has much of the soul of the original, but has a much more intense and dynamic presentation.
Bonamassa's vocals aren't dissimilar to Stevie Winwood's originals, but the guitar lines are cleaner and there's a stronger sense of groove – the original was delightfully loose, but it benefits from being tighter.
This new version does lose some of the “druggy” feel of the original, but it may well date it further than that.
