Track by Track is a recurring article series where artists guide readers through each song from their latest release. Today, Declan McKenna explains his new album to us, What happened to the beach?
Declan McKenna is back with What happened to the beach?the continuation of 2021 Zeros. On the album, McKenna continues to develop a more relaxed style, allowing the psychedelic and pop components to shine even more brightly.
What happened to the beach? It is intentionally a more upbeat album than McKenna's previous efforts. While he remains a powerful songwriter, he is now more open to having a good time or two.
McKenna explains that two main influences for the album were St. Vincent and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. The artist says of St. Vincent: “She takes the guitar to a really cool place. “Everything can be manipulated.” Meanwhile, he cites UMO's hypnotic and spatial energies as factors in the album's style.
Throughout the album's 12 tracks, McKenna's personality shines through and is joyful. “She's quite sweet and optimistic and she conveys the central feeling of the album: letting yourself go,” she says of the track “Elevator Hum.”
