Deftones hosted their annual festival, Dia De Los Deftones, on Saturday (November 2) at Petco Park in San Diego.
As is tradition, the band closed the night with their own headlining set, playing favorites and some deep cuts that hadn't been played in several years, as well as the live debut of a cover song.
After opening with two around the skin classics, “Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)” and “My Own Summer (Shove It)”, Chino Moreno and company released “Lhabia” (from that same album) for the first time since 2018. Later, “Beauty School” and “Hexagram” were also played for the first time since 2018, plus another around the skin track “Rickets” for the first time since 2019.
The only live debut came with their version of “Ghosts” from Japan, included on the Deftones album. Covers compilation in 2011. That happened about halfway through the 20-song set, which ended with an encore performance of “7 Words.”
All in all, it seemed to be another successful edition of Dia De Los Deftones. Other acts, handpicked by Deftones, on the festival lineup included IDLES, Sunny Day Real Estate, HEALTH, Duster, GEL, Paris Texas and Qendresa.
Deftones will now refocus on the 2020 sequel ohms. The alternative metal veterans have been in the studio working on the album, and an official announcement is expected next year.
The band also has a major North American headlining tour planned with support from The Mars Volta for early 2024 (get tickets here.
