Universal Pictures has shared the official trailer for Monkey Man, the directorial debut of Dev Patel. Produced by Jordan Peele, the action thriller comes swinging into theaters on April 5th.
Inspired in part by the tale of the strong-willed Hindu deity Hanuman, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an everyman whose mother was murdered at the hands of his country’s corrupt and uber-wealthy leaders. He earns his living by participating in an underground fight club, wearing a gorilla mask as he gets bludgeoned by more seasoned fighters.
The official logline reads: “After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.”

Patel’s last feature-length film job was the starring role in 2021’s The Green Night. Since then, he’s also proved he does his own stunts off set, reportedly helping to break up a knife fight in Australia in 2022.
