It's a full house this week Billboard No filtering as friends break down all things Diddy's federal indictment and Lil Wayne's response to being snubbed by the NFL, with Kendrick Lamar headlining the Super Bowl Halftime Show in Weezy's hometown next year.
As someone who grew up at Bad Boy Records, associate director, editorial content, Damien Scott, says it feels like a “betrayal” of the Diddy persona that soundtracked his childhood.
“It sucks,” he said. “It feels like a betrayal. This is one person that I think more than anyone, if you grew up in the '90s listening to hip-hop and you're from the East Coast, there was no bigger figure than Diddy.
Scott continued: “I remember talking to a music executive years ago and telling him my favorite rap album [Ma$e’s] Harlem world. And he says, “That's when hip-hop died.” … It's hard to reconcile and wrap your head around what was supposed to be going on while he was building this world that you as a fan were so much a part of. It's too horrible and devastating to learn.”
Didi was arrested earlier this week on charges of extortion and sex trafficking. The unsealed indictment referred to alleged sexual “explosions” and more than 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lube seized in raids on Combs' home earlier this year.
“I just want to know, Brother Love, why do you need a thousand bottles of baby oil? That's a little crazy,” Carl Lamar wondered.
Senior chart and data analyst Trevor Anderson is interested to see if any of Diddy's collaborators distance themselves from him and remove their songs from streaming services all together. “It will probably be a little more difficult for them in the sense of who owns the music. … Whether they even have the rights to take it down might be a moot point,” he said.
After peers like Nicki Minaj and Master P spoke out in his defense, Lil Wayne finally responded to the NFL's decision not to lock him at halftime of the 2025 Super Bowl LIX and admitted he was devastated and “hurt a lot.”
Staff writer Kyle Denis isn't mad and thinks K. Dot deserves the spot. “I feel that fans deluding themselves into thinking that one result was the only result that could happen is part of the fans overstepping their bounds,” he said.
Dennis added: “I can't think of another performer in recent memory who has put up an 'I'm Broken' video.” What is it;”
