DIIV release new album, Frog in boiling water, out May 24 via Fantasy. Now they've announced some tour dates and shared a video for the album's first single, 'Brown Paper Bag', in which the band fake a performance in Saturday night live. The video also features Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit. Check it out below, followed by the tour dates.
“Brown Paper Bag” was #1 on our song of the week list.
DIIV are Andrew Bailey, Colin Caulfield, Ben Newman and Zachary Cole Smith. Frog in boiling water is its sequel Fraud, released in 2019 via Captured Tracks. It's been five years since that album, and DIIV spent four of them making the new record, a process that according to a press release nearly broke the band as they tried to advance their sound. This is also the first album where the band functioned as a republic. “This journey has left their relationships unraveling, with the many complex dynamics of family, friendship, and finances entangled, along with suspicion, resentment, bruised egos, and troubling questions,” the press release states.
The album title was inspired by Daniel Quinn's 1996 philosophical novel The story of B. The band collectively explain more about the title in the press release: “If you drop a frog into a pot of boiling water, it will naturally frantically try to climb out. But if you put it gently in a pot of lukewarm water and turn down the heat, the frog will sink into a calm weariness, just like one of us in a warm bath, and soon, with a smile on his face, he will allow himself to boil without interruption to death.
“We understand the metaphor to be a metaphor for a slow, sick and overwhelmingly banal collapse of society under end-stage capitalism, the brutal realities we may have come to accept as normal. This is the boiling water and we are the frogs. The album is more or less a collection of snapshots from various angles of our contemporary situation, which we believe highlight what this collapse looks like and, more specifically, feels like.'
