Discogs acquired Wantlister by the software developer Stoat Labs in a move to improve its wishlist experience, the online physical music database and marketplace announced Wednesday (June 5).
Wantlister is a web app specifically for Discogs, with users linking their two accounts in order to organize and manage their often cumbersome Discogs wish lists. Launched last year, Wantlister stays in sync with your wish list and helps users keep things neat and organized based on multiple specifications, offering the ability to filter items by price, shape, condition and — crucially — cost shipping — seller location. Overall, Wantlister aims to make shopping for records on Discogs less frustrating and more personal.
Record buyers will also be able to get real-time alerts once a seller puts your bucket list item — at a price you dig and in a condition you approve — on the market, and sign up for daily or weekly breakdowns detailing their newly cluttered wish list .
CEO of Stout Labs Sean Johnson he said he and his team built Wantlister “to scratch our own record-collecting itch.”
At launch, Wantlister and Wantlist will remain separate entities, but the company said the goal is to eventually integrate the newly acquired technology and all of its features into the Discogs platform. A spokesperson also noted that the acquisition is solely about Wantlister technology, and that no staff from Stoat Labs, a boutique developer collective based primarily in the southeastern United States, will join the Discogs team.
“The Discogs community deserves best-in-class solutions to meet their record collection needs, both those developed in-house and those acquired from equally passionate outside sources,” said Discogs COO Lloyd Starr. “The acquisition and integration of Wantlister addresses immediate needs that users have been asking us about for years. It's just the latest example of our investment in modernizing the Discogs platform for all users.”
Founder and CEO of Discogs Kevin Lewandowski added, “Last year we promised the Discogs community that they would start seeing the updates they requested reflected on the platform, and this integration of Wantlister is a perfect example. Wantlist is one of Discogs' most popular features that helps fuel the collecting journey for everyone, and just one of many that Discogs is committed to modernizing as the platform continues to evolve.”
