Twenty-five years after it opened, The Muppets is surpassing Disney World's Rock 'N' Roller coaster starring Aerosmith. The Hollywood Studios attraction in Orlando, Florida, will soon be reinvented as a Muppet-themed roller coaster.
The upcoming change is the result of a domino effect occurring thanks to the construction of Monsters Inc.'s new land at Hollywood Studios. The former Muppet*Vision 3D attraction will close to make way for the new section of the park. To maintain the Muppets' presence at Hollywood Studios, Kermit the Frog and company will take over the Rock 'N' Roller coaster.
An exact schedule has not been announced, and the theme park is telling guests they can still enjoy Muppet*Vision 3D and Rock 'N' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith for the time being.
In recent years, there was speculation that the Aerosmith brand could be removed due to a sexual assault allegation against singer Steven Tyler. That lawsuit was dismissed, but earlier this year Aerosmith pulled out of touring as a result of Tyler's vocal injury. Perhaps, with the band now inactive, Disney World decided it's a good time to drop the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame act.
A statement from the official Disney Parks Blog reads in part:
“To make way for the monsters, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and more of their friends will be moving to the right To Sunset Boulevard! But there's more to the story: The Muppets are taking over the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster and teaming up with some of music's biggest stars for a rock music festival!
We know many of you share our love of The Muppets and know that your energy will be a perfect fit for this roller coaster. Plus, as the first Disney attraction to feature The Muppets, there are sure to be laughs, screams, and new tunes for fans to enjoy throughout the adventure—and plenty of Muppets-themed merchandise on Sunset Boulevard!
In the meantime, there's still plenty of time to take a super-wide limo to the Forum to enjoy Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith and watch Muppet*Vision 3D again before the final curtain call.”
