Beyoncé put her own upbeat spin on Dolly Parton's hit classic, “Jolene,” for her latest country album. Cowboy Carter. Now that the album has won a Grammy, Parton shared her thoughts on possibly performing the cover with Queen Bey at the ceremony.
“Of course I would! If I'm available,” he said MI! News. “That would be great. I mean, who wouldn't want to sing 'Jolene' with Beyoncé?”
He added: “I think it was very brave of her. When they said she was going to do 'Jolene', I expected her to be the regular one, but she wasn't. I loved what he did in it. As a songwriter, you love the fact that people do your song, no matter how they do it. He wasn't going to beg some woman like me. “Don't steal my husband.” S— from here, b—-, you don't steal him!'
Finally, Parton said she's “very proud” of Bey's new album. “I think he's done a great job in country music. I was just happy he did “Jolene”. I would, of course, like to hear how she did it the original way, but of course it's Beyoncé. Her life is different from mine.”
Before Cowboy Carter tracklist has arrived, Parton has responded to speculation that Bey may follow her classic track. “Well, I think he has!” She said Knox News. “I think she recorded 'Jolene,' and I think it's probably going to be on her country album, which I'm really excited about.”
“I love her!” Parton added the 32-time Grammy winner. “She's a beautiful girl and a great singer.”
Parton's “Jolene” reached No. 60 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1974 and No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart in February of that year. The song also won Parton a Grammy in 1975 for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for the recording, while her live version earned her a nod in the same category the following year.
Beyoncé's “Jolene,” meanwhile, reached No. 7 on the Hot 100 dated April 13, 2024.
