In the first episode of 'Billboard Unfiltered,' Billboard staff members Damien Scott, Carl Lamarre and Trevor Anderson discuss the Drake and Kendrick Lamar feud that has swept the hip-hop world, J's departure Cole's drama, Tommy Richman's debut on The Hot 100 and more!
Carl Lamarre:
Hey hey! What's going on, guys? Welcome to a new episode of 'Billboard Unfiltered'. Guys, we have a packed episode where we dive into possibly one of the biggest hip-hop battles we've seen of all time. Drake vs. Kendrick Lamar. Guys, I mean, I haven't seen anything like this.
Damian Scott:
It is definitely the most intense battle in history.
Trevor Anderson:
Yeah, just drop, drop, drop, drop, drop, drop, drop, drop…
Carl Lamarre:
I mean, they made us work overtime.
Damian Scott:
Drake called out to him. He said drop, drop, drop, drop. That's what the black man did.
Carl Lamarre:
I'm curious to know your conclusions from the battle. I mean, obviously, we haven't seen anything like this. Seven dissertations in a week, double digits in a month.
Damian Scott:
That's crazy.
Carl Lamarre:
What are some of your biggest takeaways from this battle? I'll start with you, ma'am.
Damian Scott:
My biggest takeaway is that these are two of our best hitmakers working today. I think people already knew that Drake was a hitmaker. He is the main hitmaker of our genre. I think people underestimated how good of a hitmaker Kendrick was just because Kendrick doesn't go down that often. And when he goes down, you never know what you're going to get with Kendrick. He can go in a different, more personal direction, where he's not really focused on the charts, or he can make an album like 'DAMN'. where he is much more accessible. I think this shows that these two guys, I would say, are the best we have.
