Dream Theater have revealed that they have begun recording their sixteenth studio album and their first with drummer Mike Portnoy in 15 years.
The band took instagram to share the news with fans, posting a photo from the studio and a short caption: “DT16 is officially underway!”
The prolific progressive metallers have wasted no time getting to work now that Portnoy is back in the fold. The drummer returned to the band in October after nearly 15 years away from Dream Theater, initially leaving the group to explore other musical paths after 2009. Black clouds and rays of hope.
As for the direction of the new album, guitarist John Petrucci said the band hadn't written a single musical note so far. interview last month at NAMM 2024but that he was excited to “reunite with that kind of classic magic that started the band.”
“It's exciting,” Petrucci added. “And I think that will dictate where things go.”
In the meantime, Portnoy has kept up his chops with some entertaining videos featuring drum content on the instructional platform Drumeo. He also made a recent appearance at the Bubba Bash benefit concert hosted by RUSH cover band YYNOT, performing the iconic instrumental “YYZ” alongside the tribute act.
