Irish music rights Sinéad O'Connor and Shane MacGowan will be honored at an upcoming concert in New York this spring.
On Monday, Carnegie Hall announced a one-night-only tribute show for the two musicians, headlined by the likes of Cat Power, Dropkick Murphys and David Gray on March 20, with 100% of the net proceeds going to charity. The event, presented in celebration of St. Patrick's Day on March 20, is billed as “Sinéad & Shane at Carnegie Hall.”
Glen Hansard, Amanda Palmer, Eugene Hütz, the Moutain Goats, Julia Cumming of the Sunflower Bean, Kat Edmonson and the Resistance Revival Chorus are also scheduled to perform. A flyer for the event teased that there would be “more artists to be announced”.
General admission tickets for the show is set to go on sale later this month, but fans also have the opportunity to purchase VIP tickets with different levels of access, ranging from $300 to $20,000.
The $300 option, named Transmetropolitan after the Pogues song, includes a 5-course dinner with some of the artists and other VIPs, along with a rehearsal and aftershow. The “Nothing Compares 2 U” option for $20,000 allows a fan to meet with the CEO of City Winery to help decide on the setlist for the event. A $10,000 option for two people will allow those guests access to a rehearsal performance the night before the concert, access to dinner, access to soundcheck and access to the stage during part of the show.
Net proceeds from the event will benefit PEN America, an organization that raises awareness for the protection of free speech in the United States.
Both O'Connor and MacGown died in 2023. O'Connor's family confirmed the singer's death in a statement to Irish news network RTE that the artist died in July. The cause of death has not been released, although O'Connor, who was 56 when she died, had struggled with mental health issues throughout her life.
In late November, the Pogues frontman died aged 65 after suffering from pneumonia. MacGowan was diagnosed with viral encephalitis in 2022 and entered a Dublin hospital in November to be treated for an infection. RTE reported that the musician was discharged from hospital on November 22 and returned to his home, where he later died on November 30 while in the company of his wife Victoria Mary Clarke and other family members.
