Speaking to NPR's Ari Shapiro at a interview Ahead of the four-song episode's release, Dua explained that she elevated the uptempo album track “Happy For You” to a stripped-down piano and voice ballad that represented the song in its “purest form,” free of electronic production. “It is what it is right now and I think you just feel differently about that song,” he said. “You hear the lyrics in a different way and it was really fun to think about it and bring it back to basics.”
He also talked about how he brought the oft-used phrase “if these walls could talk” to “These Walls” from “personify[ing] the walls, because no one knows you more than the four walls in your room.”
The mini-concert kicks off with an unplugged, meditative take on “Training Season,” punctuated by acoustic guitar and electric piano and a soft bass and angelic vocals, before the singer's seven-piece band ups the ante and (gently) shakes the desk with a jazz pop take Radical Optimism single.
“I've always wanted to come down and be by the desk,” a smiling Dua told the assembled NPR staffers. “We made a house Tiny office in 2020, so that's really, really special,” she added, cheekily wondering if anyone had seen this record-breaking little show. He then segued into the laid-back 'These Walls' before belting out 'Happy For You' saying he's always been inspired by the way the artist reimagines his songs for the series.
That's why she also changed the arrangement for the song about being happy that her ex has a new girlfriend, swapping the original's charming pop-dance vibe for a skeletal, emotive keyboard and vocal arrangement that brought new dynamism to the song. wish- you- the best lyrics.
“Even the hard parts were all for the best/ I see where you are now, you took the pieces/ And then you gave them to someone else,” he sings over keyboardist Georgie Ward's gentle backing. The session concludes with the album's first single, the certified banger “Houdini,” whose slinky, happy vibe likely sent the NPR crew shuffling back to their desks with big smiles on their faces.
