Dua Lipa made a one-of-a-kind appearance at London's Royal Albert Hall on Thursday night (October 17).
The concert was taped for an upcoming television special and featured a 53-piece orchestra, bringing new nuances to her latest album, Radical Optimismwhich peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 when it was released in May.
Elton John – with whom Dua collaborated on the 2021 smash 'Cold Heart' – also joined the singer during the encore for a live performance of the track. Watch a clip of the performance below.
Arriving on stage in a red Jean Paul Gaultier dress, Lipa said the show was unlike anything she's ever done before. Her seven band members were joined by 14 choristers and the Heritage Orchestra, conducted by Ben Foster. Over 500 people took part in transforming the space into a concert experience.
The historic Hall – opened in 1871 – usually hosts a mix of classical and pop concerts. Recent performers include Florence + The Machine and Sam Smith, who have also enhanced their sounds with an orchestral twist.
The show was Lipa's first UK performance since headlining the Glastonbury festival to her smash hit in June earlier this year.
The show began with several live debuts Radical Optimism tracks, including “End of An Era” and “French Exit,” on the singer's way to perform all 11 songs from the LP.
Speaking to the crowd, Lipa said she had been “thinking about this show for a long time” and was “taking it very seriously”. She added that the new arrangements allowed her to “go to the extremes of the songs and helped me get closer to the music”. He also performed a cover of London singer Cleo Sol's “Sunshine” in the middle of the set.
Radical Optimism The hits “Houdini” and “Training Season” were given a fresh sound with added strings and horn sections. There were also adaptations of it Future Nostalgia songs “Don't Start Now” and “Levitating”, which had significant success on the Billboard Hot 100 upon release in 2020.
Towards the climax of the performance came the special surprise duet with her partner Giannis. The iconic pop legend and Lipa teamed up in 2021 for “Cold Heart,” which topped charts around the world, including the UK.
Dua performed most of the set solo without her usual dancers, although the troupe joined in during the encore as she made a live debut Barbie Smash soundtrack “Dance The Night Away”.
The show was filmed for an upcoming TV special, which is to be announced soon. Lipa continues on Radical Optimism tour in Asia this November and will play two sold-out nights at London's iconic Wembley Stadium in 2025.
