Ed Sheeran has basically been waiting his whole life for a moment like this. During Offspring's set at this weekend's BottleRock festival in California's Napa Valley on Sunday night, Sheeran took the stage to join the veteran Cali punks for a blitz through 2000's “Million Miles Away.” Conspiracy of One album.
In a video posted afterward, Sheeran shared the moment he met his heroes, which began with Ed asking, “Did you see the tattoo?” The singer immediately lifted his shirt to show off the ink of the Offspring's flaming skull logo located just under his right armpit – in close proximity to the Rolling Stones' lips and tongue logo – as singer Dexter Holland, guitarist Noodles and the gang shouted and clapped with glee.
“It was the first album I owned,” Sheeran told the group about the Millennium LP which debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 album chart at the time. And then, as if he'd been rehearsing it all his life in his head, Sheeran told Holland how the planned collaboration would go, saying: “So you always go first and third and I always go second and fourth.”
“Have you thought about this?” rhythm guitarist Jonah Nimoy said in surprise. Sheeran laughed, and the entire crew rushed into an unplugged rehearsal in their dressing room, the two men trading off-line, just as Ed had imagined.
The singer's video of the special moment then cut to the Offspring set, with Sheeran rocking a black Offspring T-shirt as he strummed an electric guitar and “whoo ooh oohed” like he was born in Orange County.
In an accompanying Instagram post, Sheeran offered a little more context on his dream collaboration. “The first album I bought was the @descendant – Conspiracy of One. “I used to pretend I was in their band in the mirror and sing along on the album when I was 9, mainly on their song 'Million Miles Away' as it was the first song I ever heard,” Sheeran wrote. “I mentioned it in an interview and Noodles / Dexter contacted me when we found out we were all playing the same festival to see if I wanted to get on stage and sing it. It was a moment yes obvz. It really felt like living a childhood dream thanks for having me up there guys. Music is a crazy ride, every day I'm so grateful to be living my dream in reality.”
