Elbow's Guy Garvey joins Kyle Meredith to talk about Audio vertigo, the new album by the English rock band. Listen to the new episode above, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Garvey explains how the band developed a groove-based mindset for the record, which ultimately led them to reinvent their approach to recording. Once in the studio, bands like Talk Talk, REM and The Beatles served as sources of inspiration. Focusing on the influence of the Fab Four in particular, the singer explains how Elbow looked towards the process of the iconic act, not just his music.
“I saw a BBC documentary about the Beatles,” he recalls. “There was an interview with an engineer from The white album who said, “When three Beatles,” and it didn't matter which ones, “were in the room, the work ethic was as fierce as it had ever been, but when all four were there, the spirit brought them together.” of lethargy.' And that resonated with me.”
However, it wasn't just other musicians who influenced Garvey's creative approach. As he explains, the artist witnessed a knife fight in Istanbul, an event that altered his way of understanding communication with others. Ultimately, he forced him to reflect on his own traits and how he might have had an incorrect view of himself and his conception of strangers.
