Some of Eminem's songs The Death of Slim Shady: (Coup de Grâce) The album hit too close to home for the rapper's daughter, Hailie Jade Scott. In this week's episode Just a little shady podcast, Hailie addressed her emotional reaction to a pair of songs at Em's Bulletin board 200 top twelfth LP that has a very personal message.
“Talking about things I watched last week that I guess I watched but refused to watch again — the 'Somebody Save Me' music video came out and I watched it,” Hailie, 28, said. the heartwarming clip featuring footage of her as a child under lyrics from her dad lamenting the countless hours and days he's lost to his struggle with drugs and alcohol. Em celebrated 16 years of sobriety in April.
“I watched the whole thing. I don't think I can do it again. I definitely cry every time I hear it,” Hailie said of the song in which Em is lambasted for his failings as a father. “Another pill as I start to spiral/ Message to my daughters/ I don't even deserve the title of father/ Hailey, I'm so sorry/ I know I wasn't there for your first guitar recital,” Eminem raps on the tune with a mournful chorus of the Jelly Roll in search of salvation. “I didn't walk you down the aisle/ I missed the birth of your first child/ Your first podcast, I'm looking down, baby.”
The clip includes home footage of Hailie playing guitar at a recital, walking across the stage for her graduation and celebrating her birthday, as well as footage of Em's other children, Alaina Marie Scott, 31, Stevie Laine Scott , 22 and his younger brother Nate. in scenes of Em kneeling as he begs for forgiveness.
Hailie said in addition to being moved by the heartbreaking lyrics and video for “Somebody Save Me,” she also can't bring herself to listen to another of her dad's new songs, the Skylar Gray collab “Temporary “. This song features audio of Hailie as a baby and Marshall rapping, “A lot of people ask me, am I afraid of death?/ Truth is, I think what scares me the most/ I can't say all the things I want to say/ When I'm not here anymore/ Well, this song is for Haley for when that day comes/ Where's Haley? Where is he?'
Co-host and BFF Brittany Ednie said she wasn't even sure when she would be able to watch “Save Me.” “I'll have to prepare myself for this.” However, Ednie had heard “Temporary” and said the song “broke me”.
For now it's too much for Hailie. “I sobbed… I think about both songs, but especially about 'Temporary'. However, after watching the video and listening to the songs, Hailie praised her parents for “doing such a good job” growing up of shielding her from the reality of “how bad things were. But now as an adult in hindsight it's so scary to think about it and I think that's why I get emotional… I will say if you've ever lost an addict or a loved one, I feel you,” she added on the verge of tears. .
Eminem shares Hailie with his ex-wife Kim Scott, and as any Slim Shady fan knows, the rapper and his ex have had a tumultuous history over the years. Hailie said she enjoyed the video and watching clips of her and her siblings when she was younger, though she noted that another very personal Eminem track, “Mockingbird,” is another one she can't listen to anymore without moved. “The older I get the less I can listen to any of the songs,” he said.
