Ahead of tonight Kicking off their So Much For (2our) Dust tour, Fall Out Boy share their new video for “So Much (For) Stardust” featuring NBA star Jimmy Butler.
Before the NBA season, at the Miami Heat's media day, Butler appeared for photos and press interviews with a straightened hairstyle, facial piercings and black nail polish that immediately earned the basketball star the nickname “Emo Jimmy” on social media.
“Yes, yes, laugh,” he told stunned reporters in October 2023. “I'm very emotional right now. This is my emo state and I love it. That's me. That's how I feel late.”
While the surprise look ended up just being a media day stunt, Butler is reviving the persona for his “So Much (For) Stardust” video, with Pete Wentz and “Heat Wentz” donning elaborate Nudie suits to bring the song to life. . (When Butler straightened his hair last year, he did so while listening to Fall Out Boy's “Thnks fr th Mmrs.”)
Despite being in “emo mode,” Butler styles himself more as a country music fan, so his choice of clothing makes sense.
“I fell in love with country music in the fall of 2010. He was a senior at Marquette and everyone in the locker room was listening to Lil Wayne and Jay-Z, and I love the hip-hop world and I respect that music too, but I was telling them to turn the music down Butler said Rolling rock in September, before the birth of Emo Jimmy.
“They said, 'You worry about what's there yours headphones.' So, I went home and googled, “What's the most country song?” The first song uploaded was “Don't Take the Girl” by Tim McGraw. I took it down and went back to the locker room and started blasting that song over and over—because it was the only country song I had—and everybody was like, “Screw that shit! Nobody wants to hear that!”
Butler's country journey has taken him from “Tim McGraw to Faith Hill to Brad Paisley to Kenny Chesney to Trisha Yearwood to Garth Brooks,” to where he's now worked his own country music in Nashville and befriended artists like Morgan Waller. “That's my guy,” Butler said.
