Empress Of has announced her fourth studio album: For your consideration, scheduled for March 22. Today, along with the announcement, she shared the single “What's Love” with MUNA.
For your consideration will be Empress Of's first full release since 2020 I am your empress ofand 2022 continues Save me PE. The press release for the new album, which covers 11 tracks, explains that it will be “a bilingual album that encompasses camp and fantasy playing with the idea of Hollywood.”
In a statement, Empress Of's Lorely Rodríguez explained that the album's title is a reference to a former lover. “She was in love with a director and he was announcing his 'For Your Consideration' campaign for the Oscars,” she said. “He took me up a hill and he told me he wasn't emotionally available and he kind of broke my heart. I went into the studio that day and we wrote a song called 'For Your Consideration' that reflects glamor and Hollywood. “That was the gateway to the album and gave me the opportunity to explore broader themes.”
The new single, “What's Love,” demonstrates the emotion of Rodriguez's writing, as its hook asks, “If a love can't make you/ break you/ shape you/ Then what is love?” Carrying the melody, Rodriguez's voice blends seamlessly with the voices of MUNA's Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin and Naomi McPherson, with Gavin taking on the song's second verse.
“What's Love” is the third single from For your considerationAfter “Femenine” and “Kiss Me”, Rina Sawayama appears in the latter. Pre-orders for the album are in progress.
