Fall stars Ella Purnell and Aaron Moten team up The spark parade discuss how their own work as actors is inspired by musicians who perform other composers' music. Listen to the new episode above or wherever you get your podcasts.
As actors, Purnell and Moten are effectively cover artists, finding ways to put their personal stamp on other people's words and stories. This idea is doubly true for Fall, an adaptation of the successful video game series. The couple understands the power of artistic reinterpretation, so when it comes to their respective 'sparks,' both actors chose songs performed by someone other than who originally wrote the piece. Purnell leaned toward Brandi Carlile's smash hit, “The Story,” which was originally recorded by members of her band, while Moten chose Glenn Gould's recording of “Goldberg Variations,” which was originally written by, well, Johann Sebastian Bach.
The two talk about being susceptible to the emotions embedded in the music they love, and Purnell even admits to using it as a performance tool when he needs to cry on camera. “Some real actors who went to Juilliard, like Aaron Moten, the neighbor, could turn it on and off and cry on demand,” she explains. “I can not do this. I find it very difficult, [but ‘The Story’] it makes me cry.”
