Finneas does not like attending red carpet events.
The producer and his sister Billie Eilish were regular features on the red carpet this awards season thanks to the Barbie track What Was I Made For?, which earned them their second Best Original Song Oscar.
During an appearance on the Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast, the songwriter was asked about the fact that he often stands next to Billie during joint interviews and doesn’t get asked anything.
In response, the 26-year-old musician insisted he doesn’t mind stepping back and letting Billie answer the same question over and over again.
“Red carpets f**king suck. The interviews are awful. The idea that I get to stand there and not have to say anything is a thrill,” he said. “There are great interviews, I don’t want to be disparaging of all interviews, I just mean the format and the environment.
“If you watch an interview, you can see they shift the mic over to me and Billie relaxes and gets to not suddenly be nervous and have to come up with an answer to the question we’ve been asked 450 times in the last two months.”
Finneas noted that he feels “very seen” and “very lucky” to receive more recognition than most music producers and songwriters, adding, “I’m aware of that and I don’t take it for granted and being as famous as Billie is a nightmare. I would never want that.”
Speaking once again about red carpet interviews, he concluded, “Best case scenario is that you’re boring and the worst case scenario is you say something and they never invite you to anything ever again. It’s very high stakes.”
