Fleshgod Apocalypse have announced their sixth studio album, Opera, out August 23 via Nuclear Blast Records. The new single “Bloodclock” by the Italian symphonic death metal band is now available to stream.
The announcement follows the release of the single “Pendulum,” the first preview of the album that was released in March. Following a similar vein, “Bloodclock” combines symphonic elements and extreme death metal, with the epic arrangement following a very operatic narrative flow.
The song and album were inspired by frontman Francesco Paoli's near-death experience while climbing a mountain in 2021, which he spoke openly about in the album's press release.
“What do we see just before we die? Well, with 'Bloodclock' I bear witness and reveal the personal visions I had while hanging from a rope, unconscious, a few hundred meters from the ground. “It’s crazy how reality can be so much scarier and heartbreaking than imagination.”
He continued: “Shortly after my discharge from the hospital, Francesco Ferrini and I began writing immediately, even if I was still bedridden and unable to play. The idea was to capture the mood of those dramatic days and make sure to keep intact the feeling of desperation and fear that was still running through my veins after the accident. Later, we worked with each other to develop those ideas and create the music that deserves such a strong story, music that takes your breath away and throws you into a vortex of mixed feelings and discomfort. I think we did it 110%.”
Opera was mixed and mastered by Grammy-nominated producer Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Epica, Arch Enemy). Visually, the album's highly conceptual cover was created by two rising Italian artists: visual artist Felicita Fiorini and photographer Francesco Esposito, and depicts Veronica as Music, “a higher entity overcoming the social and artistic decay of the modern era.” ”.
“The best stories always come from pain, it is a bitter but undeniable truth,” said Paoli. “We managed to turn one of the worst things in life into a work of art, which embodies our personal and artistic growth and takes listeners on a roller coaster of emotions, where they can experience what I have gone through hand in hand with me. . “It's a nightmare when you're awake, but that's life sometimes, just terrifying.”
