Singer Florence Welch is a perfect match for “White Cliffs of Dover”
Florence + the Machine handle Vera Lynn’s 1941 song “White Cliffs of Dover” with care. The band covered the classic for Apple TV+ new series The New Look, on a soundtrack curated and produced by Jack Antonoff.
Singer Florence Welch’s goosebump-inducing vocal style is a perfect match for the song, which is about hope for a world after the war. The cover remains faithful to how the original track sounds, complete with the flourishes of strings that pop up throughout.
The New Look will premiere on Feb. 14 and follows the true stories of how designers Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, and their contemporaries navigated World War II while living, working, and launching modern fashion in Paris at the time. Ben Mendelsohn will play Dior while Juliette Binoche plays Chanel. Maisie Williams, Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Emily Mortimer, and Claes Bang round out the cast.
The show’s soundtrack will be the first release on Antonoff’s new imprint Shadow of the City, which will fall under the label Dirty Hit. For the soundtrack, he enlisted collaborators, friends, and more to cover mid-century classics fitting the tale. The 1975, Lana Del Rey, Nick Cave, and Perfume Genius are among those appearing on the album.
