The week's prettiest new pop song: Florrie's “The Lost Ones.”
“Our thorns are buried deep / But we see beauty in our dreams,” declares Florrie on the chorus of “The Lost Ones.” Speaking from personal experience: the British pop singer-songwriter-producer-drummer's forthcoming debut album has been more than a decade in the making, following her four-song EP Introduction way back in 2010 and several years of industry hell.
After a string of promising independent singles, however, Florence Arnold recently signed with BMG and Xenomania Records. Along with the release of single 'The Lost Ones' last Friday (March 22), the self-titled full-length is scheduled to be unveiled on June 14, and will be followed by an opening set for Girls Aloud at London's O2. later that month. Florrie could have moved on from her pop dreams – instead, she's set for a big year.
“The Lost Ones” hints at her professional struggle, with references to “expectations we couldn't touch” and “mistakes made when we were young,” without getting too bogged down in behind-the-scenes headaches. Instead, Florrie positions the single as a response that these disappointments don't exist in a vacuum and offers hope to those who can't see the dawn coming. The production swirls and calms until it explodes on the chorus, and Florrie's voice nimbly swings between comforting and inspiring. It's the kind of song that will sound encouraging on a lonely commute and righteous in front of an arena audience.
We'll see how many The Lost bears a similar anthem, but the lead single hints at an ambitious pop project that Florrie has been waiting a lifetime to launch. With “The Lost Ones,” he takes a long-awaited swing and connects.
Here are some new pop songs worth checking out this week…
-
Porter Robinson, “Cheerleader”
A press release describing Porter Robinson's new single as “bracing” is actually a bit of an understatement: “Cheerleader” is a synth-pop snapshot of adrenaline, with buzzing melodies and organic pile-ups that will make you dizzy (and you'll applaud Robinson for creating the complete opposite of background noise).
-
Artemas, “I like the way you kiss me”
teased Artemis album/i-like-the-way-you-kiss-me-single/1736426868″ rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank”>”I like the way you kiss me” for weeks before the release of his new single, and indeed, the darkly lit alt-pop track boasts the kind of chewy hook that could go viral — though listeners should really enjoy that guitar line , which enters as a new-school New Series.
-
Renforshort, “Hurt Like It Should”
Following up on recent single 'Serpentine' with an even more soulful pop track, Renforshort delivers personal reflection and a sly, soft dynamic on “album/hurt-like-it-should-single/1733554619″ rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank”>It hurts like it should,” speaking her truth over acoustic strums until the guitars drown out her wails.
-
Empress Of, “Lorelei”
Empress Of's new album For your attention worth your time overall, but if you only have a few seconds to get stuck in, press play on album/lorelei/1725372055?i=1725372058″ target=”_blank”>”Lorelei” and marvel at the twitchy, endlessly complex collection of beats — a sparkling pop song ensues, just when your defenses are down.
