London Records will reissue FLOWERED UP's debut album 'A Life With Brian' for the first time since its original release in 1991, newly remastered and available on double LP and CD, expanded digital and limited color double LP on April 19.
Featuring new liner notes from Heavenly's Robin Turner, the reissue adds their seminal 1992 single “Weekender” to the album package, plus a host of previously unreleased tracks and remixes, including newly commissioned remixes from Everyone You Know and Beyond The Wizards Sleeve.
Upcoming duo Everyone We Know's exciting contemporary version of “Crackerjack” is out now. Hear here. They comment:
“Inspired by some late 90s Ibiza songs and early rave tracks, this is our remix of “Crackerjack”. We were honored when Flowered Up approached us to do the remix. At first we weren't sure which direction to take, but the more we sat with the stems, it became obvious that I needed something for clubs and DJ's.”
The 'Weekender' remix from Beyond The Wizards Sleeve is the first remix in seven years from the DJ and producer duo of Erol Alkan and Richard Norris. They comment:
“Flowered Up's Weekender is a very special work of magic, from a particular time, place and feeling that can be heard coming out of the speakers. It was a challenge to take on such an iconic work, but we attacked it and gave it some new shapes that nod to the original while taking it somewhere else. You believe in Magic?”
Emerging from the capital's now legendary Acid House scene, Flowered Up were billed as London's answer to Happy Mondays and were so successful they appeared on the cover of NME and Melody Maker before even releasing a record. The ten tracks on 'A Life With Brian' represent a snapshot of a band that perfectly reflected their surroundings: the London streets they grew up in and the clubs they grew up in.
Released the following summer, Flowered Up's thirteen-minute masterpiece “Weekender,” produced by Clive Langer, is included on the album's packaging for the first time. The single was accompanied by a groundbreaking short film directed by Wiz, whose raw depiction of a weekend of clubbing is perhaps the best document of early '90s rave culture and was the subject of Heavenly Films' acclaimed 2022 documentary 'I Am Weekender'. .
The album's remastering was overseen by Flowered Up keyboardist Tim Dorney, and 'A Life With Brian' now sounds like the band always wanted it to sound. Tim explains:
“Modern mastering techniques have made it sound much better… We went through the original 1/2-inch tape track by track and using a mix of modern software and some classic analog pieces, we made it louder, wider and more punchy.” in all its aspects. “
Sounding better than ever, this complete reissue of 'A Life With Brian' offers a new perspective on Flowered Up's frenetically exciting and all-too-brief musical career. Although they started out playing acid house clubs, they were very much a band. rock'n'roll. A gang that embodied the spirit of their time, moving from the darkest corners of the dance floor to the stage in a seamless transition from working in the monetary economy to providing the soundtrack at the highest moments of the night. Sing loud: “Let me touch the world / I'll do it right, I'll do it right.”
