Flume and visual artist Jonathan Zawada are deconstructing the idea of ”EDM” for their new art exhibit.
This month, the Art Gallery of New South Wales pays tribute to Australia's live music scene under Volumea special series showcasing visual art and music from the region and beyond. Australian artists Genesis Owusu and Tkay Maidza will represent their country, while André 3000 and Kim Gordon will bring the sounds of the US to Sydney.
The event will also feature a special art exhibit by future local bass pioneer Flume, as well as his longtime collaborator Zawada. Fans may know the latter as the creator of Flume’s Grammy-winning album cover from 2016. Fur and the 2019 mixtape Hi, this is Flume..
The exhibition, which plays on the acronym “EDM,” is titled “Every Dull Moment,” and sees the duo demolish everything seen and heard at an electronic dance music festival. Attendees will be able to see lasers, visual projections, and spotlights as if they were in the audience at one of Flume's shows.
Viewers can expect the experience to mutate as a concert-quality production of random Flume music is showcased with no performers on stage and no screaming fans in attendance, giving them the chance to explore the technical layers of the festival experience and appreciate how much of the magic comes from the people in the crowd.
“Removed from the typical stadium or outdoor field setting, and devoid of human interaction or live performance, Every dull moment (EDM) is devoid of its original context,” the exhibition description reads. “Instead, Zawada and Flume share a series of fragmented moments that delve into the presence and purpose of the festival form. Vanishing points are dispersed, rhythms are lost, the moving image is momentary, and the deconstruction of the EDM experience is all that remains.”
“Every Dull Moment” will be on display at the Art Gallery of New South Wales until 21 July 2024. You can find out more about the art exhibition here. here and watch a trailer below.
