Dave Grohl is a showman. The Foo Fighters frontman loves to surprise and delight his band's fans by giving them a little of the unexpected amid the sweat and noise of a typically high-energy Foos show.
On Saturday, during the Foos' headlining slot at the Welcome to Rockville festival at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, Grohl did it again with an assist from a famous rock scion. According to fan footage of the moment, during the Foos' mid-show, singer/guitarist Grohl interrupted drummer Josh Freese to complain that while everyone else was getting their moment to shine, “I never get to f–king solo!”.
Acclaimed shredder Grohl then launched into Eddie Van Halen's infamously complex guitar line from Van Halen's instrumental classic “Eruption” from their 1978 self-titled debut album, surprising the crowd by ending the instrumental with his fingers off the neck of the guitar. But the jig was up right away as the cameras panned to Eddie's son, WVH bandleader Wolfgang Van Halen, cutting the solo off to the side of the stage.
“Man, I told you to keep that cool Wolfie, what are you doing now?” Grohl pranked Van Halen. “Everybody, leave it for Wolfgang Van Halen.” Wolfie then played a bit of his solo of the equally killer 'Hot for Teacher' as the Foos got back to work with 'My Hero'.
“Since Wolfie took so much time to do this joke with us, I'm going to dedicate this to him,” Grohl said. “Let's sing this for him, and let's sing this for his king daddy.” Last week Grohl dedicated a version of “My Hero” to the late producer/engineer Steve Albini, who was behind the boards for Nirvana's last studio album. In the wombas well as the Foos' Sonic Highways.
