Alex Van Halen has unveiled the full six-minute version of “Unfinished,” the last song the drummer wrote and recorded with his late brother, guitarist Eddie Van Halen. The instrumental track arrives one day before the release of Alex's memoir, siblings (book here).
Eddie’s guitar is heard throughout “Unfinished,” and his virtuosity really shines during a solo that comes at the 4:35 mark of the track. The song is part of the soundtrack of the audiobook version of siblingswhich is narrated by Alex.
While “Unfinished” may have been the last song the brothers wrote and recorded together, Alex recently said Billboard that there is more unreleased Eddie Van Halen material in the archives.
“I'm in no hurry,” Alex said of revealing more unreleased material. “I have some obligation to uphold Ed's standards. He was meticulous and a pain in the ass… and I need to have access to the right shots, because it's not every day we play at our best level. But we always had the recorders on. We didn't go into the studio saying, 'Yeah, we're going to make a record from start to finish.' We had bits here, bits there, you hold onto them until the time comes and you say, 'Hey, I think I like it.' that piece…' and then go back to it and build something from there.”
Alex said rolling stonemy who even approached OpenAI about turning some of Eddie's unreleased material into full songs, adding that he'd love to have Robert Plant sing over the music. “You're going to think I'm crazy,” Alex said. “But when the conditions are right, things will manifest.”
