George MacKay and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett join Kyle Meredith to discuss women, a revenge thriller about Jules, who under the name Aphrodite Banks has a place among London's celebrated drag performers. Listen to the new episode above, or wherever you get your podcasts.
One night after a show, Jules goes out to buy cigarettes and is brutally attacked by a man out with a gang of friends. Although Jules manages to recover physically, he withdraws from the outside world, traumatized. Months later, he accidentally recognizes his attacker in a gay sauna. Without makeup and wrapped only in a towel, Jules manages to approach the other man incognito and discover who he is and begins an affair with the closeted Preston, with a plan for revenge.
Both characters have a conflicting duality and required adjustment on the part of the actors who play them. MacKay turns to great roles he loves for inspiration, such as John Leguizamo as Tybalt in Baz Luhrmann. Romeo + Julietwhile Stewart-Jarrett turned inward to tune in after her latest role on the show. Guilty. The roles require internal acting and self-loathing, which was a challenge.
MacKay says, “In the initial attack that happens, there's kind of a spark in this relationship. I remember when we filmed it, there was a day when [directors] Sam [H. Freeman] and [Ng Choon] Ping said, 'We need some additional stuff from Preston,' and we tried, from Jules' point of view, and the direction I took that day was to basically say it all to yourself… It's all self-deprecation.”
