Gojira stole the show at last month’s Olympic Games opening ceremony in Paris with their mesmerizing rendition of “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)” featuring opera singer Marina Viotti. Now, the French metal masters have unveiled an official single version of the song via streaming services (listen below).
The official audio comes two weeks before Gojira supports Korn on a North American tour that kicks off on September 12 and runs through October 27. Tickets available here.
Viewers tuning into the Olympic opening ceremony on July 26 watched Gojira perform from platforms that extended outside the windows of the Conciergerie building, a former prison and courthouse that sits on the banks of the Seine River. They performed an extreme metal version of the French Revolution-era song “Ah, Ça Ira!” and were accompanied by opera singer Marina Viotti, who floated down the river in a wooden boat.
The performance featured a headless Marie Antoinette and massive pyrotechnics as Gojira brought heavy metal to the Olympic opening ceremony for the first time in history.
A few days later, drummer Mario Duplantier reflected: “It was a huge honour to be part of this ambitious and epic ceremony in Paris. I must admit that headbanging in front of a billion people, banging as hard as I could on a revolutionary stage made of fire and blood, was a very rewarding experience. A big step for the metal community as well.”
