After testing this feature elsewhere, Google launched the hum-to-search feature in the YouTube Music app on Android. We find everything by searching these days, but it can be difficult to find music if you only know its melody. Now Android users have the chance to find that elusive song… if they know how to hum it.
A new way to search
Humming to search isn't new: It started three years ago with Google Search, as an experimental feature. Then in 2023, they implemented a similar feature for YouTube. Now it's coming to Google's YouTube Music app for Android. You hum it and YouTube plays it.
This is a useful feature that improves the visibility of music online. Modern businesses rely heavily on the Google search engine, but most focus on keywords and SEO, and gaining attention through consumer offers. This can be seen with free trials of Spotify Premium or promotions of digital entertainment services such as iGaming websites. In each case, curious Internet users can access a wide range of music streaming tests or best casino bonuses and offers, such as free spins for certain games. They are also very common in retail and e-commerce, and are best seen with Amazon Prime trials. They capture audience attention and generate buzz online, making services easier to find with an online search. While it's a great strategy for music streamers, musicians don't have the same luxury if users can't remember their lyrics.
Everyone has heard a song that has escaped them. You don't know the artist or the lyrics you remember are too vague to stand out on the Internet. That's where humming could save you if you remember the melody the song used. It's a long-awaited little feature that can put an end to those frustrating times when you can't find a song you like. Of course, this all depends on your ability to carry a tune.
YouTube Music Hum to Search
For the full description of the smoke to search feature of Google, you can find the original blog post describing it here. It works exactly the same for YouTube, since it is owned by the tech giant. Back then, it was introduced as part of the English Google Assistant app on iOS and in about 20 languages for the Android app. The page also delves into how music recognition technology works. As you might expect, it's the result of a lot of machine learning. By turning the audio into a musical fingerprint, search can match it to an existing song. This means that your humming is more likely to work with popular songs than with obscure songs, naturally.
Since 2023, the capacity of machine learning models has exploded thanks to generative AI. Meanwhile, the cost of operating them has decreased as the technology becomes more widespread. Generative AI, which can create text, video and audio, has also improved Google's search ecosystem. All forms of search have been updated and this experimental feature has become more viable.
That's why Google added this feature to YouTube in 2023. It may seem counterintuitive to debut it in the standard YouTube app, but again it was an experimental move meant to test the feature. Now, in 2024, they've added the feature to the YouTube Music app, which can access a much larger and more focused library of audio files.
To use it, go to YouTube Music and look for the search icon in the top right. If you are using version 7.02 or later, you should also see a waveform symbol. Tap that symbol and do your best. If you have access to the song, it will also detect it as Shazam. The service is currently only available for YouTube Music on Android, but it should inevitably come to iOS apps in the future.
