Gracie Abrams finally released the Viral Single “Close to You” seven years after recording the demo

Gracie Abrams puts her heart in the line of fire on her latest single, “Close to You,” released seven years after she first teased it with a 20-second clip on Instagram in 2017. The full-length version of the record will appear on her upcoming studio album, Our secretreleased June 21.

“After seven years of sitting on the 'Close To You' demo, it finally felt right to rework it and include it on this album,” Abrams said in a statement. “I'm really grateful for the encouragement from everyone online who let me know they still want to hear the song after all this time – it makes me want to dance with them and I can't wait until we do.”

Days before “Close to You” was released, Abrams explained how she came up with her sophomore album when many fans had begun to lose hope that they would ever receive it in full. An audio for the unreleased version of the song has been used in more than 11,000 videos on TikTok, many of which were accompanied by captions calling for its release.

“I wrote Close To You seven years ago and we did a demo that I posted 20 seconds and somehow you cared enough about it to revisit the song seven years later,” he wrote in Instagram. “Close To You wasn't originally part of TSOU – it's from a completely different era, we'd finished the whole record top to bottom, but I heard you loud and clear. consider this a pre-deluxe bonus track.”

Abrams produced “Close to You” with Sam de Jong, with whom she previously collaborated on “Stay” and “Minor.” In her post she wrote: “The reunion was so sweet! @itssamdejong, thank you for doing this with me!!! @electricladystudios I love you forever and I mean it.”

Our secret follows the release of Abram's debut album Good riddance and was introduced with the lead single “Risk”, which was produced by Aaron Dessner of the Nationals. “We really had fun writing this album,” Abrams said when announcing the record. “There were also occasional tears.”
