The long-lost manuscript of Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter The growling silver trumpet, has been scheduled for publication. The newly discovered book, which will be published on October 8, will tell the story of the band's origin.
The late Hunter, who co-wrote Grateful Dead songs like “Dark Star,” “Touch of Grey” and “Box of Rain,” originally wrote The Growling Silver Trumpet: The Birth of the Grateful Dead: The Lost Manuscript of Robert Hunter in the early 1960s. At the time, he had just met Jerry Garcia and began chronicling the band's early days in the Bay Area, including performances at Kepler's Books and road trips through the countryside.

The growling silver trumpet includes a foreword by Dead & Company guitarist John Mayer, an introduction by the band's biographer Dennis McNally, and an afterword by Brigid Meier, a close friend of Hunter's. Pre-orders are in progress.
“Fans will experience the early days of Hunter, Jerry Garcia, and their cohorts, following them to the shelves of Kepler's Books, renting instruments at Swain's House of Music, and across the countryside on road trips,” the official description promises. “Readers will witness improvisations, inspired intellectual banter, and dialogue that is at once funny, brilliant, and outrageous.”
Although best known for his work with the Grateful Dead, Hunter also performed solo. Rhino has announced an archival series in honor of his memory, launching with a deluxe reissue of Hunter's 1974 solo debut, Tales of the great rum traffickers. Pre-orders are underway ahead of their June 7 release.
Meanwhile, Dead & Company continues to keep the spirit of Garcia and the Grateful Dead alive. The supergroup is gearing up for a residency at The Sphere in Las Vegas starting in May, and you can get tickets now. here.
