In his last episode 20/20Deborah Roberts speaks to the 32-year-old a week after her release from prison
Gypsy Rose Blanchard's next move is the subject of an upcoming 20/20 episode, premiering Friday, January 26. Anchor Deborah Roberts spoke to the 32-year-old a week after her release, by which time she had already transformed into a viral star. Despite being mostly out of the public eye while serving seven years of a 10-year prison sentence for orchestrating the murder of her mother's alleged abuser, Blanchard has no interest in the limelight.
“Honestly, I'm a very shy person,” Blanchard says in an exclusive clip from the upcoming episode when asked if she's enjoying the uptick in attention. “I don't think I'm doing anything that no one else would do.”
Rolling rock Senior writer EJ Dickson, who has been covering the case, appears in the episode to provide context around Blanchard's virality. “She posted her first freedom selfie and it went crazy viral,” Dickson explained, referring to the mirror selfie Blanchard shared on Dec. 28 — a day after it was released — that garnered millions of likes on Instagram. “I saw this tendency to treat her as this camp icon. But then I noticed that people were positioning Gypsy as a mainstream celebrity.”
Blanchard has been hounded by the paparazzi while adjusting to life outside of prison with husband Ryan Anderson, whom she married while behind bars in 2022. She's also inspired memes on Twitter and TikTok. But one of her biggest viral moments so far came from Instagram, where she defended Anderson in a comment under one of my own selfie posts.
“Ryan, don't listen to the haters. I love you, and you love me. We don't owe anyone anything. Our family matters. If you get likes and good comments great, if you get hate, whatever because THEY DON'T MATTER,” she wrote. “Besides they're jealous because you rock my world every night…yeah, I said it, D is fire.”
When asked about the intimate nature of some of her online content, Blanchard told Roberts, “Well, I'm a newlywed. I'm newly married and just out, so I'm living my best married life with my husband. I don't think it's any different than any other wife.”
