As the battle for the number one spot on the Billboard 200 this summer has shown, fan culture is booming and, in some online circles, becoming more intense and antagonistic. Now, Paramore's Hayley Williams has commented on the circumstance, calling fans who focus on competition and commercial performance “fools.”
In a video posted to her Instagram story, Williams said: “It’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot and why I don’t really love it… especially in the music world, whether it’s pop girls or any scene, really, people now only care about numbers and statistics. And that’s so pathetic.”
Continuing, she admitted that it’s “really fun” to look at the numbers – “We’ve had a number one album and we’ve beaten this and that album, yeah… that shit is cool” – but overall, commercial success shouldn’t take priority over simply enjoying music. “I just remember a time when that wasn’t as important, and it wasn’t a war of opinions situation either,” she said.
“Anyway, I think it’s really annoying,” she continued. “On my side of the internet, which is basically not the internet, I just support all the pop girls. Maybe it’s a privilege because I’m not a pop girl, but I think everyone should just calm down and let people make really cool music and stuff… I’m over it.”
In a post following her story, Williams added that “witnessing fan wars makes me so happy.” [Paramore] “I'm not really into pop music. I'm just enjoying the good stuff that's come out this year, and I'm sorry some of you can't, it must be tough, dammit.”
Paramore is currently off the pop scene as they join Taylor Swift as the opening act for the European leg of her “The Eras Tour.” If you’re included, check out upcoming dates and Buy your tickets here.
